Beaufort County has many charming communities including:
v Beaufort, South Carolina’s second oldest city and most often referred to as “Queen of the Carolina Sea Islands”, mainly because of the charm and heritage that it has retained throughout the centuries. Beaufort is located in the center of Beaufort County, on Port Royal Island, which boasts a cluster of Sea Islands on the southeastern tip of SC. Surrounding Beaufort is Hilton Head & Savannah GA, 46 miles to the south and Charleston, 69 miles to the north. Moss covered live oaks and tall pines grace the streets of Beaufort. From the new downtown Beaufort boardwalk, one can watch ocean going vessels making their way down the Atlantic Intra-coastal Waterway.
v Port Royal, located between the Beaufort River and Battery Creek in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Home to two military installations, Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island and Naval Hospital, Beaufort, as well as next door neighbor to the historic city of Beaufort and Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort. Port Royal is recognized as one of America’s leaders in small town New Urbanism.

v Lady’s Island lies east of downtown Beaufort, just across the Woods Memorial Bridge. The scenic island was known for its cotton plantations, owned by Beaufort’s privileged families. Governor Joseph Blake purchased much of the land for himself and in time it became known as Lady’s Island. Some say that the Spanish discovered the land “on the day of Our Lady” in 1526, hence the name Lady’s Island. The Intra-coastal Waterway separates downtown Beaufort from Lady’s Island.
v St Helena Island, lies to Beaufort’s east, and is home of the Penn School which was founded in 1862 and used to educate freed slaves. Almost 100 years later, Rev. Martin Luther King and other members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference used the property as a retreat center. Today known as the Penn center, it is one of our Nation’s most historically significant African-American educational and cultural institutions. The historic status of St Helena and the Gullah culture has helped fend off development, so condo’s and gated communities are not allowed on the island.
v Harbor Island is nestled east beyond Beaufort, Lady’s Island, and St. Helena Island and adjacent to Hunting Island in Beaufort County. This 1,400 acre private community on the Harbor River is home to some year around; others use it as a private get-a-way. Here you find condo’s and single family homes with Harbor River or Atlantic views and wonderful beaches for that morning walk or sunset stroll.
v Fripp Island is a gated resort community which lies at the end of the succession of Sea Islands in Beaufort County. This is a 3,000 acre island with access to two championship golf courses, marina and restaurants. Golf carts are plentiful on the roads and trails that cover the beautiful island. Fripp offers endless views of the Atlantic Ocean as well as looking back towards Beaufort and the marshes of Old House Creek and Storey River. Here you will find single family homes and condominiums as well as town homes.
v Cat Island, southeast of Beaufort is surrounded by vast stretches of unspoiled wetlands and is home to some of the most elite addresses in Beaufort County.
